The Counselor-The Holy Spirit
"And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Counselor to be with you forever-the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept Him, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. But you know Him, for He lives with you and will be in you. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. Before long, the world will not see Me anymore but you will see Me. Because I live, you also will live." John 14:16-19 Jesus has promised the precious Holy Spirit to all who believe and put their life upon the name of Jesus. His wonderful Spirit will be with us until the day of His return. The moment you put your trust in Jesus and surrender your heart and life to Him, the Holy Spirit comes to live inside of you.
The Holy Spirit is our helper and our guide. He "convicts the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment, in regard to sin, because men do not believe in Me, in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see Me no longer; and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world (satan) now stands condemned." John 16:8-11
The Holy Spirit is not an "it", it is a "He." We can grieve Him, or in other words, make Him sad by the things we do or say. We can quench His fire by not being obedient. 1 Thes 5:19 The Spirit helps us in our weakness. Romans 8:26.
The Holy Spirit is a gift from God. The Spirit shows us how to have patience, love, joy, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. All of these are attributes of the Spirit and we are to live by the Spirit. Galatians 5:22-25 On our own, it is impossible to live a godly life. Sure, you may do something good on occasion, but to consistently live as Jesus did, we need the help of the Holy Spirit. It is in our nature to sin. Apart from Christ, there is nothing good in us. Your flesh will always want what it wants when it wants it, thinking only about you and your selfish desires.
We are sealed by the Holy Spirit until the day of redemption. "And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in Him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession-to the praise of His glory." Ephesians 1:13-14
The Spirit helps us to pray. "In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what to pray for, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. And He who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God's will." Romans 8:26-27 Intercede means to "plead on another's behalf." This is what the Holy Spirit does for God's elect. By His Spirit we cry out "Abba Father. The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children." Romans 8:15-16 Have you ever been praising the Lord or singing a song of worship to Him and your heart is just so full or you may start crying as you think about how holy and perfect and true and faithful God is.....this is the Holy Spirit testifying with your spirit that you are His! That is just a taste of what is to come! Imagine the day when you will be in His presence and see His beautiful face! I don't know everything I will do on that day, but I know this-I will fall on my face before my Lord!
Jesus is coming back for His own! One day, we will see Him face to face and all His beauty and majesty! Until that time comes, we must be alert and stay in His word. God's word is the one and only truth-it is flawless. Hide it in your heart so that you can stand. There have and will continue to be false prophets and people who preach another message that contradicts the gospel. Hold on to Jesus. Don't take your eyes off of Him. His promised Holy Spirit will help you and will be with you. Jesus said, "in Me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." John 16:33
