What Is Your Purpose in Life?
At some point in each of our lives, we will probably ask the question why am I here? What is my purpose in life? We may try to find our purpose in a career, in our family, in a hobby or an organization. All of these are in themselves good things, but they can easily become idols if we give them priority over the Lord. Jesus said, "If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters-yes even his own life-he cannot be My disciple (Luke 14:26)." Now, we must be clear, Jesus is not speaking of hating in the literal sense here. He is clearly telling us that our relationship with Him must have presidence over every relationship, over our desires and over anything in our life. Nothing should even come close to the deep intimacy we share with the Father through Christ. With that being said, Jesus should be the motivation behind everything we do. It is not about making a lot of money, having a great career, finding the right person or having a family. There is nothing wrong with any of those things, and God may choose to bless you in some or all of those ways.
But there is more, so much more to this life. God created each one of us to fulfill a purpose. There is no one on earth like you. God made you unique. You are still here on the earth for a reason. It is easy to get caught up in the busyness of life. We are always in a hurry it seems. There aren't enough hours in the day to get everything done. Then we wake up the next day and do it all again. We become tired, over-extended and sleep deprived. Somewhere deep within our souls we think, there has got to be more to life than this...more than rushing around all the time, more than trying to get to the next level, more than that promotion, more than the next big material thing...there has to be more, but what is it?
Jesus. He is your purpose. He came that you may have life in Him and bring Him glory. "He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by Him all things were created; things in heaven and things on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together (Colossians 1: 15-17)." Jesus is supreme. He is God in the flesh and He holds the world together. You are alive right now because of Him. Every breath you take is a gift from Him. It is only fitting that we give Him our life. This doesn't mean just giving Him glory at church on Sunday morning, going to a bible study from time to time or just praising Him when you feel like it. Jesus deserves our highest praise all the time, when things are good and when things are bad because regardless of our circumstances, He is on His throne and He is worthy! Give glory to God each day in your workplace, in your home, at the gym, at the store, and in your relationships. Live your life for Jesus on purpose, giving thanks and praise to Him in all situations. Lay aside your will and allow God to do His will in and through you. "So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God (1 Corinthians 10:31)." Live your life in such a way that others want what you have. Let His light shine through you. God has called each of us to do certain things. Some may be called to missions, others may be called to encourage, others may be called to acts of service, still others may be called to contribute to the needs of others. You and me were created by God for one thing-to give Him glory.
You are precious. You are fearfully and wonderfully made. You were made in the image of God. You have a story-a God story, one that is uniquely yours, one to share with those around you. The world needs to know Jesus. There are so many broken people. So many who need to know this life is not all there is. So many who need to know the One who can make them whole. So many who need to know the healer, forgiver and lover of their soul. You may be thinking, who am I? Well, you're in good company because Moses thought the same thing. God will use anyone whose heart is open. You see, we don't have to have it all together for God to use us. He is the one who takes all of the broken pieces of our lives and makes us beautiful. Friend, you matter! You can make a difference for the kingdom! Pray and ask God to use you. He will show you the way and make it clear. "Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you saying, 'This is the way, walk in it.' (Isaiah 30: 21)." Remember, when God speaks, it is always in love and always lines up with His word. It is always for your good and it is always for His glory.
So, my friend, whatever you do, do it for the glory of God. Nothing you do for Him is ever in vain. "Therefore, my dear brothers, stand firm, let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain (1 Corinthians 15:58)." This life is not the end, it is just the beginning with eternity right around the corner. Make your life count for Christ. Live worthy of the calling.
"Now we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands. Meanwhile, we groan, longing to be clothed with our heavenly dwelling, because when we are clothed, we will not be found naked. For while we are in this tent, we groan and are burdened, because we do not wish to be unclothed but to be clothed with our heavenly dwelling, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. Now it is God who has made us for this very purpose and has given us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come. Therefore, we are always confident and know that as long as we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord. We live by faith not by sight. We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord. So we make it our goal to please Him, whether we are at home in the body or away from it. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive what is due him for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad (2 Corinthians 5: 1-10)."
